Our History

This timeline shows the foundation date of all Queensland Catholic schools currently in operation. Some schools on the timeline are amalgamations of much older schools but appear on the timeline when they came into existence in their current form.

Many other Catholic schools have opened and then closed within the last 175 years as population centres have shifted with the changing times.

All Hallows’ School, Fortitude Valley

All Hallows’ School is a Catholic girls school catering for students attending Years 5 to 7. All Hallows’ was established by the Sisters of Mercy, with Mother Mary Vincent Whitty appointed as the first Principal. The school’s motto is Dieu et Devoir (God and Duty) and the current principal is Catherine O’Kane. Dr Lee-Anne Perry was appointed as the first lay Principal in 1999. St Mary’s College, Ipswich

St Mary’s College is a Catholic girls secondary school located in Ipswich. The college was established in 1863 by the Sisters of Mercy. St Mary’s Primary School, is a co-educational Catholic school located in Ipswich. The school history is intricately intertwined with the history of the parish, the Sisters of Mercy and the Christian Brothers.The school motto is With God We Will Succeed. St Saviour’s Primary School, Toowoomba

St Saviour’s primary school is the oldest Catholic primary school in the Toowoomba Diocese. The school has continued to grow and build on the traditions established by the Sisters of Mercy and stand by their school motto Strive for Goodness. The current school principal is Madonna Sleba. St Joseph’s School, Kangaroo Point

St Mary’s Catholic School, Bowen

Bowen’s first Catholic school, St Mary’s was founded in September 1872 by two Sisters of St Joseph, Sister M Gertrude and Sister M de Sales.  The school motto is Mary Our Help and the current principal is Collette Williams. To find out more about the school’s history click here.

St Patrick’s Catholic Primary School, Gympie

History tells us the first Catholic school was established in Gympie in 1872. The school stands as it is today due to the dedication and hard work of the Sisters of St Joseph, the Sisters of Mercy and the Christian Brothers.The current principal is Susan Geaney. St Joseph’s Catholic School, The Strand

In 1872 St Joseph’s Church was built on the Strand. The first parish priest, Rev Fr Connelly applied to Mother Mary MacKillop, foundress of the Sisters of St Joseph, for teachers to help him staff a school for the children of Catholic settlers in Townsville. The sisters opened a school and like the church, it was dedicated to St Joseph. The school stands by its motto Love God Love Each Other. To find out more about the school’s history click here.

St Saviour’s College, Toowoomba

The Sisters of Mercy first arrived in Toowoomba on 23 July, 1873 to teach at St Patrick’s Church/School, now known as St Saviour’s College. he St Saviour’s College community remembers and esteems the traditions of the Sisters of Mercy and the work of their founder, Catherine McAuley. St Joseph’s College, Gregory Terrace

St Joseph’s has a long and impressive history dating from 1876, when Sr Francesca and Sr Teresa, two Sisters of St Joseph arrived to set up the very first Catholic primary school in Bundaberg. St John’s Catholic School, Roma

In 1881 two Sisters of Mercy arrived in Roma and the first class commenced at St John’s School with an enrolment of 130 students. The school motto is Future in Faith and the current principal is Jim Brennan. For more information on the history of the school click here.

Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Catholic Primary School, Thursday Island and Hammond Island

In 1887, the first Australian born Our Lady of the Sacred Heart (OLSH), Sister Margaret Sweeney began a tiny Catholic school on Thursday Island. The school motto is All for Jesus and the current principal is Majella Lynch-Harlow. To find out more about the history of the school click here.

Sacred Heart Catholic Primary School, Sandgate

Sacred Heart Catholic Primary School was established in 1893 and originally offered both primary and secondary school education. The Sisters of Mercy had a presence in the school from 1893 until 1995. The current principal is Julian Cotter and the school motto is For God. Others. Self. Our Lady’s Catholic Primary School, Longreach

Our Lady’s Catholic Primary School, Longreach opened on February 19, 1900 in St Brigid’s Church, with Mother Agatha Collins in charge. St Francis’ Catholic School, Hughenden

In 1888, St Mary’s Catholic Church was opened and school was held in the church. In 1900, Mother Mary Berchmans, Mother General, arrived in Hughenden with five Sisters of the Good Samaritan. Star of the Sea Catholic Primary School, Gladstone

The Marist Sisters took over the running of Star of the Sea from the Mercy Order in 1971, and then the Marist Brothers in 1990. The school motto is Let Your Light Shine and the current principal is Jennett O’Mullane. For more information about the history of the school click here.

St Anthony’s Catholic Primary School, North Rockhampton

Southport Flexible Learning Centre, Southport

The Southport Flexible Learning Centre falls under the banner of Edmund Rice Education Australia. The Southport Mobile Education Program began in 2014, running two separate programs for young people on the Gold Coast: Nothside (Helensvale to Southport) and southside (Southport to Currumbin). Southport FLC is committed to working with young people who wish to re-engage with education, and who have found challenges at mainstream school.  For more information click here.

The Catholic school in Toowong was first known as St Michael and Holy Souls, then as Toowong Convent School, and is now known as St Ignatius School. Good Counsel Primary School, Innisfail

The Sisters of the Good Samaritan of the Order of St Benedict commenced the school as the Sacred Heart School with an enrolment of 42. The school motto is Seek, Learn and Serve and the current school principal is Liam Kenny. For more information about the history of the school click here.

St Patrick’s Catholic School, Winton

St Patrick’s Catholic School was established in 1906 by the Sisters of Mercy, after the late Archbishop Sir James Duhig, then Bishop of Rockhampton, brought the Sisters of Mercy from Townsville to Winton. The sisters set up the first school in a little wooden church. The school motto is For God and Australia and the current principal is Frances Graham. St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School, Wandal

The Catholic school in the parish of Wandal in Rockhampton was originally known as ‘Stella Maris’. However, for most of the school’s history, it was known as the Wandal Convent. In 1909, Mary MacKillop, the co-founder of the Sisters of St Joseph, was given permission to build a school.  Classes began in 1912 and the school motto is To Love is to Serve. The original St Mary’s Convent School at Laidley was officially opened in 1912 with less than 100 pupils enrolled. The Sisters of Mercy were the founding religious order. The school motto is Grow In Love. For more information about the history of the school click here.

St Patrick’s Catholic School, Nanango

Sisters of Mercy were present in the school until 1983. They educated students until the end of Year 10. In 1971 the secondary school closed and became a primary school. St Mary’s Catholic Primary School, Charleville

St Mary’s Catholic Primary School was opened in Charleville by the Sisters of Mercy in 1913.  The Sisters opened the school at the invitation of the Bishop and parish priest when the local Catholic community called for a Catholic school to educate their children. Guardian Angels’ Catholic Primary School, Wynnum

Fr Thomas Enright oversaw the construction of Guardian Angels’ Catholic Primary School, Wynnum.  The school was run initially by the Sisters of Mercy. Our Lady of Lourdes Primary School, Ingham

Father T. O’Connor, the first Parish Priest of the Ingham district, was appointed in 1914. The following year, at his request, the first community of Sisters of Mercy arrived from Townsville.  Under the leadership of Mother Aloysius, the Sisters set up the first “Our Lady of Lourdes” school in the local Presbytery, and had an initial enrolment of 60 children. The school motto is Faith … Mercy … Education … Hope and the current principal is Paula Martin. St Laurence’s College, South Brisbane

St Laurence’s College began as a primary school in 1915, but moved to middle secondary in the 1920’s. The first senior class graduated in 1933. The College was established by the Christian Brothers and the school motto is Facere et Docere. For more information about the school click here.

St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School opened its doors on 24 January 1916 by the Sisters of St Joseph and has a strong tradition of the charism of Mary MacKillop. At the instigation of Father John Ryan, on the 6th August, 1916 St Joseph’s Convent and School were officially opened by His Grace the Archbishop of Brisbane, Dr James Duhig. Our Lady of the Assumption School, Enoggera

In 1918, Archbishop Duhig purchased the 13 acre property known as ‘Shine Hill’ and invited the Sisters of the Good Samaritan to take on the mission of Catholic education in the suburb of Enoggera. In 1923, the need for a school in Atherton prompted the Parish Priest of Herberton Fr Doyle to obtain permission for a school which would be housed in the old Atherton church. The school, opened in the same year,  and was staffed by the Sisters of Mercy of Herberton. The school motto is Love, Faith, Knowledge and the current school principal is Donna Maxted. To meet the needs of educating children in the area, St Joseph’s Primary School was officially opened on Sunday February 8, 1925 by Archbishop Duhig. Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Catholic Primary School, Springsure

The Sisters of Mercy arrived in 1926 to establish the Convent School. It was originally known as The Convent of the Little Flower and later changed to Our Lady of the Sacred Heart School. Inala Flexible Learning Centre, Inala

Tonya Carew APM OAM, from the Oxley District of the Queensland Police Service (QPS) approached Youth +, Edmund Rice Education Australia (EREA) as she was interested in establishing a flexible learning program for disenfranchised youth in the Inala community. In July 2010, a Memorandum of Understanding was established between the QPS and Dale Murray the National Director of Youth + to establish a flexible learning outreach.
